Have you ever gone into a dressing room to dry on clothes and a few minutes later discover that your skin is irritated? I distinctly remember this happening to me and I thought what on earth just happened to my arms?! I was trying alot of clothes on at Urban Outfitters, (they had this $5 sale going on) and as soon as I stepped out of the room to show my mom this cute top I had red bumps all over my arm! I was so alarmed and left the store immediately.

After further investigation it turned out I had a temporary reaction to the chemicals/handling of the clothes once it directly hit my skin. That being said I recommend that new clothes be washed before anyone wears them, especially if the clothing will be in direct contact with the skin. Chemicals such as Formaldehyde may have been sprayed onto the clothes to keep them fresh and prevent the growth of certain bacteria. This preservative has been reported to cause allergic reactions on the skin. In addition, formaldehyde can irritate the eyes, nose and breathing passages. While the United States places limits on the amount of preservatives such as formaldehyde that may be used on clothing, other countries have been known to allow higher levels. Children tend to be more sensitive than adults to chemical irritants, so for clothes that are difficult to wash, it may be a good idea to try to air them out prior to wearing. Also, you may want to have the child wear light undergarments beneath their clothes. Continue reading ‘Be Careful of What You Wear!’ »

The swine flu vaccination program began a couple of weeks ago and is now in full swing. Some of the terminology used in discussing this infection can be quite confusing so here are some terms you may come across.

An infection is said to be Endemic in a population when there is a constant amount of infection present. For example in the UK there will be a number of chicken pox cases reported each year. The chicken pox is passed around from person to person but as long as the number infected remains more or less the same each year, then we can say that chicken pox is endemic in the population.

On the other hand if we take malaria as an example, we will find a number of cases detected each year in travelers returning from abroad. The number may even be the same from year to year. There is one significant difference however, and that is, that the infection cannot be passed on from person to person. In the case of malaria we need the presence of an external factor for the disease to run through the population. This factor is the malaria carrying mosquito and since this insect does not exist in the UK, the disease cannot become endemic. Continue reading ‘Endemic, Epidemic, Pandemic – What Do They Mean?’ »

Acne treatments that work don’t have to be ones that you buy from the store. You can make many very effective acne treatments at home. Of course, it goes without saying, that if you have severe cystic acne, that you should see a dermatologist immediately. Deep, cystic acne can cause permanent scarring and cannot be treated effectively with home treatments. If your acne is more of the annoying occasional break out variety, then a home treatment is certainly appropriate.

Acne treatments that work incorporate exfoliation and reducing inflammation to irritated skin. When I say exfoliation, I don’t intend for you to scrub at your skin until it is ready to fall off! In fact, over exfoliating may make your acne worse. Acne-prone skin needs to be treated gently, yet effectively. Don’t use the rough scrubs made out of apricot kernels you can buy in the drug stores.

Acne treatments that work take advantage of the healing properties of salicylic acid. Treatments made with this acid are commonly sold in drug stores for a very healthy sum. You can easily make your own salicylic acid treatments at home in the forms of scrubs and masks using simple crushed aspirin tablets. As a bonus, treatments made with this ingredient also help ward off the signs of aging. Continue reading ‘Acne Treatments That Work’ »
