Social skills are one of the areas a child with Autism will have the most trouble in. It is an area a lot of people have problems with but when you complicate it with the communication deficits it is even more difficult. Social skills are a combination of verbal and non-verbal cues which require interpretation.

Children with Autism have problems with communication and do not even seem to realize that there are social rules. When you figure social rules change for different environments and different people it is even more confusing. Another consideration is that different social skills work better for different people.

Then there is the whole issue of non-verbal communication. Typical people can tell by the tone of a voice or the look on someone’s face whether they are sincere, cynical, or making fun of a person. This is extremely difficult to teach a child with Autism.

There are different techniques that can and are successfully used to teach people with autism the social rules. There are also different ways to teach social skills. Many people with Autism can and do learn the way to navigate through these situations. Techniques, to compensate for the lack of non-verbal understanding, is also a possibility for parents and professionals that work with children with Autism. As you settle down for a good night’s sleep the last thing you want to know is that your bedroom is infested with millions of tiny creatures who are extremely active while you sleep. Apart from their dirty, unhealthy habits, these critters can cause untold misery for anyone who suffers from asthma or allergies as they are a potent trigger for their attacks.

Dust Mites are found everywhere in the home but the bedroom is their favourite haunt and your bed in particular. They thrive in the perfect conditions that you provide for them, warmth, humidity and a regular supply of their favourite food, your dead skin cells. This is why the only way to guarantee a really healthy night’s sleep, is to get rid of dust mites, completely. Continue reading ‘Get Rid of Dust Mites and Enjoy a Healthy Night’s Sleep’ »

If we’re going to look at a common anxiety disorder symptom list – those most often experienced by sufferers – we first need to ask ourselves if they are indeed symptoms. Or if the word “sensations” would be more accurate and a better term to use. You see, most of them aren’t any more real than the “fear of impending doom” that’s causing them. They’re the result of our minds playing tricks on us, the same mind that’s telling us we need to fight some attacker or flee some danger that doesn’t really exist.

The term “symptom” refers to something caused by a disease, like a runny nose is a symptom of a common cold. But anxiety disorder is NOT a disease at all. The point here is that if we call the sensations caused by a false fight or flight response symptoms, we’re likely convincing ourselves that anxiety and panic disorders are diseases. And if they’re diseases, they should be treated with medications or medical procedures.

Do you see where I’m going with this line of logic? If we think of our anxiety problems as a disease, we’re not going to take responsibility for what our minds are doing to us. Therefore, we need to keep it in the right perspective, or we’ll never be able to properly treat – or better yet, cure – what is actually an emotional and psychological problem. “Anti aging lotion!” is the promise of the cosmetic manufacturers. Currently, consumers spend an astonishing $2 billion dollars annually on various products and treatments that promise the fountain of youth. Expensive skin treatments line the shelves of departments stores, but in reality the results they deliver may be more psychological than in reality. After all, if you’ve just plunked down $90 for a bottle of lotion, wouldn’t you tell yourself your skin is looking much better?

Anti aging lotion is just one of a series of products designed by manufacturers to make us part with our money a little more quickly. Naturally, lotion is just one part of the equation. These same manufacturers will tell you that you will also need a cleanser, a toner, an eye cream, a night cream and a serum in their line to deal with those wrinkles starting to appear around your eyes and mouth.

Unfortunately, the properties of anti aging lotion are as much a function of their packaging than of their performance. They make vague promises to the consumer, such as “designed to diminish” and “reduce the appearance of.” Even the scientific studies the use to convince the consumer of the effectiveness of their products are often dubious in nature. Research studies by cosmetic firms generally meet the accepted gold standard of a double-blind, peer-reviewed, randomized study. It is one thing to say that a lotion improves skin tone–what kind of skin tone? In a rat, or in a 50-year-old woman? Continue reading ‘Anti Aging Lotion – Little More Than Manufacturer’s Hype?’ »
