A Circle of Support is a concept that some parents have used with their child that has Autism. The Circle fulfills different needs at different times in the child’s life. It can collapse and another one start or some people’s circle evolves.

Children with Autism need a group of people to help in a variety of ways. This group of people is sometimes called a Circle of Support. The group can be a formal group that meets on a regular basis. It might be a group that is less formal and does not ever really meet.

This group of people may include paid people in a child with Autism’s life and unpaid people. Ideally the unpaid people out number the paid people but this is not always so in the beginning. That issue may be one that the group decides to work on.

In the beginning when a child with a disability is young, the adults may start the group. It may be a parent or a teacher. The idea is to find three or four other children in that age group and invite them to help the child with Autism. If this little group meets on a weekly basis they can talk about what needs to be done. Continue reading ‘What is a Circle of Support?’ »

Asthma is a disease characterized by inflammation of the air passages. The symptoms of asthma can be caused by many things called triggers like pollen, dust, dirt, and even exercise. Yes, even exercise can cause asthma. If you start feeling the symptoms of asthma like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, chest pain, shortness of breath, and extreme fatigue in 5 to 20 minutes since you started exercising, you may be experiencing exercise induced asthma symptoms.

Exercise induced asthma symptoms are just like the usual symptoms of asthma. The only difference is that these symptoms are triggered by exercising. In children, aside from the usual symptoms of asthma, exercise induced asthma can have discreet representations. You may consider the following examples as exercise induced asthma symptoms: children who avoid or do not like participating in physical activities or games; children who complain of difficulty in playing games and sports with their peers. Those are the symptoms in children can lead to problems with socialization or low self-esteem. Continue reading ‘How to See Exercise Induced Asthma Symptoms’ »

In China, a furrowed brow and puckered cheeks are still taken as an honorable sign. They are an indication that a senior citizen has reached a stage in life associated with experience, knowledge and wisdom. Not so in Britain. We live in a youth-centred culture where it’s a social disgrace to be a wrinklie or frump. (These are probably one and the same thing, because the term ‘frump’ almost certainly derives from the middle English word frumple, meaning ‘wrinkle’) A woman over sixty can only get a job at the BBC if she’s prepared to undergo plastic surgery or have regular doses of botox injections.

A few months ago a journalist goaded Gordon Ramsay, the celebrity chef, by telling him: ‘You have got more lines on your forehead than an Ordnance Survey map’. The comment obviously struck home, for it’s reliably reported that the chef has now joined the long line of public figures puffing out their faces with shots of botulin toxin. Instead of being a mark of pride, wrinkles have become an object of derision. Ribald jokes abound: like the tale of the elderly lady in a geriatric home who had a sudden urge to expose herself before her male compatriots. Stripping off her flannelette nightie she streaked gaily through the communal lounge. ‘Did you see what I saw?’ said one startled fellow. ‘Yes’, said his elderly comrade, peering over his glasses. ‘It looked like Mavis Jenkins.’ ‘That’s what I thought’, said the first. ‘I don’t know what she was wearing, but it certainly needed ironing.’ It’s callous gags like that that swell the sales of anti-ageing toiletries.
