Chiropractic Care as an Alternative for Arthritis Since I’m a chiropractor, you know I have to start here!
Let’s go back to the basics… what is arthritis? It’s wear and tear on a joint. Degeneration leads to loss of the cushioning cartilage (or discs, if it’s in the spine), the bones may rub on each other, and there’s pain, swelling, and loss of movement in the joint because of it.
Chiropractors are known for adjusting the spine and many of us also adjust shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, knees, hips, and ankles. If a joint isn’t moving properly (think of your ankle – has it ever popped while walking, or felt stuck and you rotated it back and forth to try to get it moving?) then it’s going to deteriorate faster than if it had proper motion. When a person grows old, the body eventually gets weaker, since it has been alive and functioning for the past, let’s say, seventy years. The body is strong enough to stand the test of time, at least for a hundred years or so. Of course, it depends on the person if he/ she maintains their health and body to last them through their golden years. But not all people endure being old. A lot of cases concerning health conditions are showing through old age. Since the body gets weaker, it is more prone to illnesses and diseases that may harm or hurt the person more, hence, they have become more vulnerable to such conditions.
A common type of arthritis that affects people over the age of 60, is osteoarthritis. Since symptoms of arthritis are mainly regarded as joint inflammation, or the feeling of pain or stiffness, this type of arthritis also has the same conditions, but is occurring mostly when of old age. Aches and swelling with weakened motion in the joints, particularly hands, hips, knees or spine are the common symptoms of arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), osteoarthritis is described as the deterioration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint; also bony overgrowth. Basically, this illness is breaking down a person’s cartilage. Since the cartilage is the tissue that is wrapped around the ends of the joint, having this joint disease will make the bones rub together, causing joint damage over time. Treating gout is all about relieving pain and discomfort, avoiding physical, irreversible damage to joints and preventing future attacks. In addition to taking various different pain medications, depending on the severity of pain, those with gout are instructed to rest and increase fluid intake.
Gout symptoms can be treated with aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen sodium or ibuprofen. When the pain is too great for these over-the-counter medicines, corticosteroids such as prednisone can be administered orally or injected directly into the joint. Although these drugs can cause side effects, they are only used during a very limited time frame and shouldn’t cause major problems. Continue reading ‘Common Treatments For Gout’ »

With more than 200 different types of arthritis it’s hardly surprising that so many of us will experience some form of arthritis pain at some stage of our life. Though generally associated with the aging process, arthritis can also show itself in the very young and at all ages in between. In this article I describe some of its more common forms and their treatment.
Osteoarthritis
There is no specific cause of osteoarthritis, a condition that affects a large number of the population; however it is known that excessive wear and tear on the joints, especially the hips, knees, ankles, toes and hands, can be a factor in triggering the condition, as can an injury to a joint and being overweight.
It is also believed that arthritis can be hereditary. Indications are that most people carry the potential to develop arthritis, but that some lifestyles and/or physical properties within the body can deter it from occurring. Osteoarthritis is generally suspected when the sufferer experiences pain and/or stiffness in the joints and ligaments. Continue reading ‘Arthritis – What is it and How Can it Be Treated?’ »

How to cure gout is all about diet. This is the key to keeping gout at bay and to possibly eliminating it from your life. However, you need to determine what foods to avoid, or reduce, before discovering how to cure gout. You see, you first should understand how gout comes about.
Gout is brought on by too much purine, a chemical in our bodies that converts food to energy. Once the food has been converted, the purines breakdown into uric acid. If this uric acid is excessively created, it lends to uric acid crystals being formed in your joints. It’s this very action that causes painful bouts of gout.
Along with the pain of gout, comes swelling and inflammation. Continue reading ‘How to Cure Gout – Super Simple Food List Reveals How’ »

Arthritis is a medical term that implies inflammation of joint(s). Causes of this illness are diverse and involve many pathological mechanisms. The causes of arthritis are either infective or non-infective. However, whatever the cause is, it leads to pain, tenderness and limitation of movements of the affected joint(s) in most cases.
Infective causes of arthritis are numerous and include viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic causes. Hepatitis A virus, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C, Alphaviruses, Rubella virus, Retroviruses, Epstein-Barr virus, Varicella-zoster virus and Mumps virus are recognizable causes of arthritis. Bacterial arthritis is sometimes termed septic arthritis and is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococci. Septic arthritis is usually caused by spread of infection from nearby bones (osteomyelitis). Bacterial arthritis is rather common in the pediatric age group. Fungal causes of arthritis usually affect immune-compromised individuals like HIV infected patients. Lyme disease is one of the recognizable infective causes of arthritis in America.
