Cancer is a deadly disease all over the world, with very little known about curing it completely. One type of cancer that affects many women around the world is ovarian cancer. It has now become the fifth leading cause of death in cancer patients and leads the charts under all the gynaecological cancer deaths. Women of all demographics, races and ethnicities show risk factors for developing ovarian cancer. After one has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, the first response is to affirm the ovarian cancer survival rates and life expectancy. These rates differ from patient to patient, but some common factors are the age, family history of disease and early diagnoses of the cancer.
As the age of a woman increases, so do the chances of her having ovarian cancer. Very few women below the age of 40 are seen to suffer from this, but it is not a complete rarity. However, ovarian cancer survival rates are much higher in young women that the elderly. Women under the age of 20 show the highest survival rates, with close to 99% of the women recovering fully from it. This changes almost minimally for women under the age of 30 with death rates climbing to 0.8%. With early screening of cancer, death rates decline rapidly and most women go on to live completely healthy lives. After the age of 35, with the onset of other gynaecological problems and lower chances of pregnancy, the survival rates take a slight dip; going down to some 96.8% and even lower if the cancer has advanced to stage III or IV. Skin cancer was once considered a disease that affected mainly adults as a result of years of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. In recent years, however, doctors began seeing skin cancer in children as well. Since children have not had the years of sun exposure believed to be needed for cancer development, scientists began to look for another reason. Research found that a defective gene may be to blame.
When the enzymes responsible for repairing DNA damage, called nucleotide excision repair enzymes, are mutated, it can lead to mutations in other cells, altering the genes in them. If one of these genes is a type that suppresses cancer, it may actually reverse its actions and begin inducing tumors. (more…)
There are an estimated 1.3 million base station antennas installed on towers and rooftops worldwide. As more and more of these are installed to increase coverage and to power new applications the ocean of electropollution to which we are exposed will only continue to thicken. Cell towers and antennas are popping up everywhere. In the United States there are now more than 1,947,000 towers and antennas currently online. Towers are the structures on which antennas are placed and multiple antennas may be attached to a single tower. (more…)
It’s unfortunate that we should have to worry about acute leukemia symptoms. After all, at some points in our history, it always looks like a disease is getting better. In this case, it is Leukemia – and many doctors say that it is something that drugs will help. However, there are still more than 30,000 Americans a year who are diagnosed with this disease. Many are diagnosed with the acute forms of Leukemia referred to as AML (Acute myelogenous leukemia) or ALL (Acute lymphoblastic leukemia).
It is very important that when an individual is diagnosed with the acute form of Leukemia, they receive treatment quickly. When they receive treatment quickly, the chances of recovery certainly improve. And, sometimes it can be put in remission; in some people it has been cured in these early stages.
Although many people may not know it, Acute Leukemia is a type of cancer that starts within the bone marrow. Doctors find that the white blood cells of those with this disease are abnormal and then they start to produce more. They continue to grow and stay in the bloodstream to crowd out the white blood cells that are healthy. When a person doesn’t receive a diagnosis in time, it can spread to other areas of the body, and often will stay in the spleen and the liver. (more…)
Achieving a green tea and prostate cancer treatment would be a great breakthrough in providing a solution to a condition that had 186000 new cases in the United States in 2008. However, while this is a clear possibility in the future, it is still a work in progress at present.
Studies in the laboratory have shown that the active ingredients of green tea (mainly polyphenols and catechins) take part in reactions against the start, growth and spread of cancers. Thus green tea (GT) polyphenols can prevent the formation of the same type of carcinogens as found in tobacco.
They have also been found to inhibit the same type of toxic molecules found in some cooked fish and meats that damage DNA and have been associated with pancreatic, colon and breast cancers.
One of the major catechins found in GT known as EGCG shows a strong effect against mutations and DNA damage and also inhibits the enzymes that lead to tumor promotion. This EGCG has also been found to inhibit the growth of malignant cells and can induce the death of unwanted cells (a process known as apoptosis). (more…)
Mesothelioma is primarily caused by long-term, regular exposure to asbestos. People who have been exposed to asbestos insulation in the workplace have a higher death rate than anyone else from this type of cancer. In fact, they are about three hundred times more likely to die from it than those who are not in regular, direct contact with it. In some cases, people who were exposed to asbestos in the workplace have family members who develop the disease. This is thought to be possible because the workers bring the asbestos home on their clothes and their family members are in direct contact with it.
Pleural Mesothelioma, the most common form of the cancer, is thought be caused from the inhalation of asbestos dust. The fibers of asbestos are so small that the lungs are not able to filter them, allowing them to embed in the tissue of the lungs and form into cancer. Sometimes Mesothelioma is located in the lining of the abdomen. This is called peritoneal Mesothelioma , and is thought to be caused by ingesting asbestos. Asbestos can be ingested by eating food that has been contaminated with asbestos. (more…)
In the teratomas are so-called embryonic tumors because they arise from fehlentwickeltem embryonic tissue. They may be benign or malignant. Teratomas in various parts of the body can be found, among others:
* to the coccyx and sacrum (about 50 percent of the teratomas)
* in the ovaries (approximately 20 percent)
* in the mediastinum (chest between the two lungs),
* in the testes,
* Back into the abdominal cavity and
* in the brain and spinal cord.
Typical is a reflex behind the pupil and inflamed eyes.
The symptoms depend on the location of the tumor. Located e.g. a palpable nodule in the area of the coccyx or the abdominal cavity, it comes to abdominal pain or respiratory symptoms. Daughter tumors (metastases) may form in the lymph nodes, lungs, liver and bones. (more…)
PSA (prostate specific antigen) is one of the tests that are suggested in order to determine your prostate health. This examination is aimed at determining the quantity of proteins in your blood streams which is directly related to your reproductive structure. PSA is used to convert your viscous pre-semen into liquid so that it stimulates your sperm. The prostate specific antigen is an examination that is done on men. There are various facts that are associated with the prostate specific antigen. Some of these facts include;
- Prostate and PSA- the prostate is accountable for the production of the PSA in all occurrence. In an ordinary instance, the prostate generates small amounts of protein. When the prostate generates a lot of PSA then there is need for concern. This is because there is something unusual with your prostate.
- Arguments on PSA- PSA test are at times believed to be inaccurate. This is because; the elderly men are known to have low levels of prostate specific antigen production. This is brought about by the increase in the size of their prostate. There are however other tests that can be used to determine the reasons for the low production of PSA. (more…)
The survival rate of any form of cancer depends on how early it is detected and in what stage it is detected. This includes colon cancer. Medical professionals cannot stress enough the importance that early detection plays in the treatment and curability of colon cancer, or any other form of cancer.
The earlier you can detect this disease, the better the prognosis will be. Colon cancer is highly treatable and curable if found in the earlier stages. If you suspect that you are experiencing any of the signs or symptoms of this disease, you need to contact your physician immediately to schedule an appointment.
If you are in any of the risk categories for developing colon cancer and have never received an exam, you need to contact your physician immediately even if you are not experiencing any of the signs or symptoms. This is considered to be a preventative measure. (more…)
Cancer of the prostate is the most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of death in North America. It is a primarily a disease of older men, increasing in incidence with age, with the majority of cases diagnosed in men older than 65 years old. It is eliminated that each year, approximately 189,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 30,000 will die of it.
The exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, although androgens are believed to have a role in its development. Almost all primary prostate cancers are developing in the peripheral zone of the prostate gland. This location increases the risk of local spread to the prostatic capsule. As the tumor enlarges, it may compress the urethra, obstructing urinary flow.
Men with early-stage prostate cancer often in pain with the initial manifestation noted. Urinary manifestations depend on the size and the location of the tumor and the stage is malignancy. Death usually occurs secondary to debility cause by multiple site of skeletal, especially to the vertebrae. It may eventually involve in bone marrow, resulting in severe anemia and impaired immune function. The definitive diagnosis can be made only by biopsy. However, other test may suggest the presence of prostate cancer. (more…)
