Most people have some concerns about taking part in a clinical trial, often because they’re not really sure what it will mean for them. Taking time to get as much information as you need before you decide is the best way to be sure that you will make the choice that is right for you. These are the commonly asked questions about mesothelioma clinical trials:

1- Is the clinical trial risky?

Yes, all clinical trials have risks. Every medical test, drug, or procedure has risks. The risk may be greater in a clinical trial because some aspects of any new treatment are unknown. This is especially true of phase I and II clinical trials, where the treatment has been studied in fewer people.

Perhaps a more important question is whether the risks are outweighed by the possible benefits. Since mesothelioma cancer is often a terminal disease with the current treatment modalities offering little hope in terms of cure, most victims are often willing to accept a certain amount of risk for a chance to be helped, but it is always important to be realistic about what this chance is. Ask your doctor to give you an idea of what the possible benefits are, and exactly what benefit is likely for you.

With this in mind, you can make a more informed decision. Some people may decide that any chance of being helped is worth the risk, while others may not. Others may be willing to take certain risks to help others.

2- Will I just be used as an experimental “guinea pig?”

There’s no denying that the ultimate purpose of a clinical trial is to answer a medical question. People who take part in clinical trials may need to do certain things or have certain tests done to stay in the study.

But this does not mean that you will not get excellent, compassionate care while in the study. In fact, most people enrolled in clinical trials appreciate the extra attention they get from their health care team. In 2005, the Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups surveyed over 1,700 people with cancer on their awareness and attitudes about clinical trials. Only a few had taken part in clinical trials. But most of those who did were very satisfied: 96% said they were treated with dignity and respect, 92% said they had a positive experience, and 91% would recommend that family or friends take part in a clinical trial if faced with cancer.

3- Will I get a placebo?

Most mesothelioma cancer clinical trials do not use placebos unless they are given along with an active drug. It would be unethical to give someone an inactive medicine as it would deny the mesothelioma victim of availing themselves of the available treatment for the cancer.

The very least you should expect from any clinical trial is to be offered the standard of care already being used.

4- Will my information be kept confidential?

As much as possible, all of your personal and medical information will be kept confidential. Of course, your health care team needs this information to give you with the best possible care, just as they would if you were not in a clinical trial.

Medical information that is important for the study, such as test results, is usually put on special forms and into computer databases. This is then given to the people who will analyze the study results. Your information is assigned a number or code ,your name is not on the forms or in the study database. Sometimes, members from the research team or from the Food and Drug Administration may need to look at your medical records to be sure the information they were given is correct. But your personal information is not given to them and is never used in any published study results.

We all know massage offers great benefits to clients, everything from physical to emotional wellbeing, but I was as surprised as the doctor, when a massage turned out to be a lifesaver. While giving my athletic firefighter husband a relaxing massage, I found a melanoma on the bottom arch of his right foot, the last place you would expect to find it. I began my career in massage therapy 15 years ago after many years working as a para-medical professional in mainstream and complementary medicine. As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for 19 years, I have performed CPR and other lifesaving maneuvers in my volunteer career. Imagine my surprise when my husband’s dermatologist told him that I saved his life when I spotted something strange on his foot. The site was actually a four year-old fire ant bite that had healed, but changed suddenly. The discovery led to several surgeries and precautionary procedures to ensure that the 1mm thick melanoma has not spread to the lymphatic system. I, as many massage therapists and practitioners, take Continuing Education classes to keep licensure current, but the amount of education I have received while accompanying my husband, in just one visit to UW Hospital in Seattle was as “priceless” as the Master Card commercial.

“Swelling of the supra clavicular lymph nodes are often the first sign of a problem within the lymph system of the body,” according to Sydney R. Lillard, MD the surgeon working with my husband, at UW Hospital in Seattle, WA. She said, “Massage Therapists spend a lot of time working in that general area with the neck and shoulders. An interesting physiology of the body is that the right node drains only the upper right side of the lymph, while the left supra clavicular node drains the rest of the entire body. Swelling or nodules in lymph nodes warrants a physical examination and medical workup by a physician,” “Just because you have sun burned your ears, let’s say, doesn’t mean that’s where a melanoma may develop. Melanoma is more likely to develop if you have had one or more bad sunburns in your lifetime may and develop anywhere on the body. Areas of the skin that may have been injured are also potential melanoma sites.” My husband, fair-haired avid outdoorsmen, always wears SPF 50, so this was news to us.

What Is Melanoma? Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. However, if it is recognized and treated early, it is nearly 100 percent curable. But if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal. While it is not the most common of the skin cancers, it causes the most deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2007, there will be 8,110 fatalities, 5,220 in men and 2,800 in women in the U.S. The number of new cases of melanoma is estimated at 59,940; of these, 33,910 will be in men and 26,030 in women. Melanoma is a malignant tumor that originates in melanocytes. the cells which produce the pigment melanin that colors our skin, hair, and eyes. The majority of melanomas are black or brown. However, some melanomas are skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white.* In my husband’s case it was a dark purplish brown, like that of a blood blister that changed to black, and grew irregular borders quite rapidly. As a precaution, doctors performed a procedure called Lymphoscintigraphy or mapping of lymph nodes to ensure the Melanoma did not spread to any of the closest nodes near where the melanoma has been removed. In the outpatient surgery, he then underwent further surgical resection of the melanoma area, and a skin grafting at UW Hospital in Seattle, WA. All of that over a tiny change in a very old injury.

Who is at Risk? Everyone is at some risk for melanoma, but increased risk depends on several factors: sun exposure, number of moles on the skin, skin type and family history (genetics).* Here are things to watch for when working with skin: Beware of these danger signs of Melanoma (skin cancer)·

* No New Moles After age 35.
* Pigment Changes of Moles.
* Moles Larger than a Pencil Eraser.
* Moles or skin growths that may bleed.
* Irregular Borders and shapes of Moles.
* Have a women and a man check your skin for changes, Women are better at seeing pigment changes, men at shape and density.
* Supra Clavicular Lymph Nodes Swelling.
* Take precautionary pictures every 3 months. Date and compare them to the next one.
* Sun Screen every time, everyplace and everywhere!

There are a number of natural sunscreens on the market, and clothing to prevent UVA/UVB damage. I have been known to pick up the phone and schedule appointments for clients if I have found something suspicious. I always follow up the appointment with a letter to their primary doctor and the client. I love what I do, and I take my responsibility very seriously. I never dreamed that I’d have to do this for a family member.

I have recently spent a bit of time refreshing my knowledge regarding skin anatomy, and pathology as you can well imagine. I enjoy teaching massage & energy work at local community colleges, in addition to my private practice. For further information regarding Melanoma visit http://www.skincancer.org/melanoma/index.php*

Finding the Right Mesothelioma Lawyers

You may have been recently diagnosed with the terrible and life shattering disease mesothelioma cancer. Visit here http://mesotheliomatreatment-option.blogspot.com

After you have spoken to your doctor and received your test results and your prognosis and diagnosis, there is another step to take that may change your life and your family’s life forever. The next crucial step to take is that you hire a mesothelioma lawyer immediately. It may even be beneficial to speak to a mesothelioma lawyer before you get confirmation from your doctor. At least you will have the groundwork in place and the mesothelioma lawyer can start to find more information about when and where you were exposed to asbestos.

Most lawyers that specialize in mesothelioma work on a contingency basis. This means that there is no costly retainer fee and that the attorney works for a percentage of the settlement. If the mesothelioma lawyer does not manage to win you any compensation, he doesn’t get paid. This is what is more commonly known as a no win, no fee court case. Always read the small print when accepting the help of a mesothelioma lawyer on a no win no fee basis. You may have to pay court fees if you are on the losing side. If this is the case, you may have to find court costs and lawyer costs for the other side. This is something that rules in your favor because an attorney that works on contingency will do the best possible job when presenting your case. Many companies have been set up especially to deal with mesothelioma cancer cases. This is simply because the cases are long and drawn out and can take years to resolve. This means you need someone who is not only qualified to handle your case, but someone who is also dedicated and genuinely caring for your cause.

Meeting with Prospective Mesothelioma Lawyers

When you consult with mesothelioma attorneys, describe your issues in depth, and then ask if they are able to take your case. If they agree, ask about fees and if they’re willing to work on a contingency basis. You will need to provide your mesothelioma lawyer with lots of information about when and where you came into contact with asbestos. Who you were working for at the time, how long you were unknowingly or knowingly in contact with it and if any safety measures were put into place.

The Final Decision

You need to meet with at least 3 to 5 mesothelioma lawyers to make sure you are dealing with someone you can trust and someone that you like. When you’ve met with three to five mesothelioma attorneys, it is then time to make a decision based on what you have discovered speaking to all the mesothelioma lawyers. Use the notes you have made previously and then you need to ask yourself the following very important questions.

- Did the attorney seem genuinely interested in my case?

- Did he listen to me and respond appropriately?

- Did the attorney explain alternate courses of action if there were any?Visit here http://mesotheliomatreatment-option.blogspot.com

These days, many women are faced with risks of being infected with cervical cancer. This notwithstanding, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable of all cancer types. To minimize the risk of being exposed to and eventually attacked by cancer of the cervix, certain steps need be followed as outlined below:

1. Creating proper awareness on cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
Women should endeavour to consult the appropriate doctor or even a gynecologist on issues and questions regarding cancer. The advice of an awareness group and cancer-related organizations should also be sought as much as possible.

2. Carrying out proper screening test every year for HPV infection
A Papanicolaou test or Pap smear is the current method of screening for the human papillomavirus. Women are enjoined to go for a pap smear test within three years after becoming sexually active for the first time and every one year thereafter. If the pap smear test is carried out on yearly basis, a woman is likely to have the cancer discovered early and treated better if detected.

3. Carrying out effective vaccination against HPV infections.
The cervical cancer vaccine is usually administered to teenage girls ages 11-17 to protect them from HPV. The vaccine is offered by Merck and Glaxo Smith Kline. Women, especially teenagers, need to consider having this vaccine. Also, if any questions should arise as regards this preventive method, it is advisable that a doctor be asked about the risks as well as benefits of taking this injection.

Do you want to get up-to-date information on how to diagnose cervical cancer, cancer types and symptoms as well as effective preventive measures that can be taken?

Then I have the secrets for you at no cost. This can be found on my website at http://cancersafetips.blogspot.com

Testicular cancer is also known as germ cell tumor and is of two kinds – seminoma or nonseminoma. About 40% of testicular cancer are seminoma type and the other are divided into four sub-types; choriocarcinoma, teratoma, embryonal carcinoma and yolk sac tumors. The cancer can sometimes also be a combination of both cancers, and are called mixed germ-cell tumors.

Other testicular cancer symptoms to be on the lookout for are loss of sexual appetite, buildup of fluid in the scrotum and pain or tenderness in the testicles. To be sure, testicular cancer isn’t something that is on the tip of most people’s tongue. Still, it is something that people need to be aware of. Nobody is immune from it, as champion Lance Armstrong proved when he almost died as a result of the condition.

Testicular cancer forums can be great for men who don’t know anyone who has had to deal with testicular cancer. These forums can be like instant support groups, with members writing in words of encouragement, suggestions or even promises for prayer support.

There are way too many symptoms for testicular cancer to list here, but I’ll briefly go over some of the most common ones that are easier to notice. Many people who get diagnosed with testicular cancer notice a dull pain or ache in their abdomen or groin. Also, an unusually enlarged or shrunk testicle is something to take notice of.

Other symptoms of testicular cancer include pain and tenderness in the testicles, a dull ache in the groin or abdomen and a lump or hardening of one of the testicles. Treating the cancer can be a difficult thing for the patient to go through, sometimes chemotherapy or removal of the testicle is the only way to rid the body of the cancer.

There are several symptoms of testicular cancer that you may have if you’ve got it, including loss of sexual appetite, blood in semen and a significant increase or decrease in the size of one of the testis.

Testicular cancer and cancer treatment can make a man infertile. If you want to father children, talk with your doctor about storing sperm for such a purpose before you start cancer treatment. Storing your sperm for future use will alleviate the worries of being infertile and allow you to concentrate on getting better with the cancer treatment.

Another risk factor for testicular cancer is any type of congenital abnormalities or an inguinal hernia. Men that have a birth defect in the kidneys are at higher risk for testicular cancer. Of course, a past history of testicular cancer or a family history of this type of cancer puts a man at an increased risk.

Other signs of cancer in the testes include a sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum or a dull ache in the groin, back or lower part of the abdomen. If these symptoms appear, they should be checked out by a doctor right away.

The classic sign of testicular cancer is a lump. The surface of the testis is smooth and you should not feel anything irregular even if you give it a small squeeze. If you feel a ridge or a nodule or something like a peanut that is different then you need to see your doctor and get checked out.

Did you know that 30%-50% of breast cancer could be prevented with a healthy diet and getting regular exercise? Sounds too simple to be true, I know. But the human body is amazing when it comes to taking care of itself. Good nutrition is important but you also need to avoid xenoestrogens which are toxic to your body. Follow these tips below and you’ll have healthy breasts and you’ll be taking a proactive role in preventing breast cancer.

1 – Focus on Good Nutrition

- Avoid simple carbohydrates and processed oils (hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oil).
- Choose fresh natural foods, not canned and processed foods.
- Choose organic, it’s been proven to have more vitamins and minerals.

Choose good healthy fats. Our body requires good fat to function properly. Too many people eat processed vegetable oil or partially and hydrogenated oil which are harmful to the body.
-Omega 3 essential fatty acids (from ocean fish)
- Nuts
- Avocados
- Coconut oil
- Even butter and cream as long as it’s from organic, grass fed cows

Choose good protein sources. If your vegetarian it’s important that you get some form of protein from beans, tofu or nuts. If you’re a meat eater, follow the guidelines below:
- When choosing meat, buy organic, from grass fed animals (it’s more lean and healthier)
- Don’t overcook proteins, (but do cook to a safe temperature for the type of meat, a medium rare steak is alright, but you wouldn’t eat your chicken that way)

2 – Avoid Xenoestrogen Substances

Xenoestrogen substances are a major cause of breast cancer and other female health problems. They are chemical compounds from environmental pollutants. They mimic estrogen and attach to your estrogen receptor sites and cause the endocrine system to dysfunction.

Xenoestrogen Sources
- Commercial meat and dairy products
- Pesticide residues on commercial produce
- Soft plastics
- Microwave cooking in plastic
- Laundry detergents and household cleaning products
- Heavy metals like lead and mercury

Counteracting Xenoestrogen Substances
- Consume more foods like broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and turnips. Or take a good supplement that’s capable of getting rid of xenoestrogens
- Detox your liver with foods like garlic, onions, cabbage and cauliflower. Or detoxify with supplements or a cleanse designed for removing environmental toxins from the body.

3 – Use Natural Foods As Prevention Remedies

There are lots of nutritious foods that promote good breast health and prevent breast cancer. The trick is to actually eat them. If you can’t get the nutrients from your foods, then supplementing might be a good
option for you, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer.

Ellagic Acid is known for stopping carcinogens from intiating cancer cell growth and is found in in cherries, grapes, walnuts, raspberries, strawberries and pomegranates.

Bioflavonoids detoxify harmful estrogens and help prevent the production of cancer cells.

They are found in found in citrus, grapes, onions and buckwheat.

Lignans prevent the growth of tumors and are found in nuts and seeds, especially flax seed.

Beta carotene naturally protects against cancer and can be found in foods like beans, carrots, cantaloupe, pumpkin, winter squash, yams, broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach and sweet potatoes.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin provide cancer fighting benefits for pre-menopausal women and women with a family history of breast cancer. The best food sources are found in collard greens, spinach, kale, corn and most yellow vegetables.

Lycopene helps eliminate free radicals from cigarette smoke and can be found in tomatoes, carrots, guava, ruby red grapefruit and watermelon.

Catechins have a powerful antioxidant effect and are found in black and green tea.

Chlorophyll, the green pigment found in plants, prevents damage to the DNA in cells which occurs when normal cells transform into cancerous cells.

4 – Be Positive and Reduce Stress

We know the damage that stress causes to our body so controlling stress is always a good thing. But having a positive attitude can be very helpful in controlling our health too. Learn to pamper yourself to reduce stress.

- Take a walk in nature
- Get a massage
- Garden
- Listen to good music
- Take a bubble bath or soak in hot tub

Breast Massage

Regular breast massage helps to improve circulation and lymph drainage, it decreases symptoms of PMS, menopause and menstrual cramps, and decreases the discomfort from pregnancy and breast feeding. I have a link to an instructional video on my website. Getting trapped lymph fluid to move is good for healthy breasts and can alleviate pain and tenderness. You may eventually eliminate lumps if done regularly.

5 – Switch from Mammography to Thermography

Avoid mammograms and consider thermography instead. I know this sounds a bit radical. But do some research on mammograms vs. thermograms. Thermography can detect abnormalities at the cellular level which could be 10 years before you might otherwise notice them and there is no harm done to sensitive breast tissue.

Mammogram x-rays increase your risk of cancer. A typical mammogram of both breasts will expose you to 2,720 RADs (Radiation Absorbed Dose) that’s 8 pictures at 340 RADS each. And they encourage us to get a mammogram every year. The non-direct natural radiation that we as humans absorb every year is only 300 RADs. There are times when x-rays are necessary, but if there is a safer and effective alternative to routine yearly mammograms, why not check it out?

There is lots of money raised every year in support of finding a cure for breast cancer, which is great. But I wish there was more of a focus on educating women on how to prevent breast cancer. Because it all boils down to good nutrition and making healthy choices. By adopting these lifestyle changes in our life, we’d not only prevent breast cancer, but we would prevent all kinds of other illnesses and diseases as well.

In this article today I would like to discuss several tips, tricks, and tactics that almost everybody can use to help reduce their risk of developing cancer by nearly two thirds.

Cancer is one of the most devastating diseases on the planet. Anybody who has gone through this disease and survived or has a friend or family member who has knows just how intense and horrible it can be. Luckily there are many different things that anybody can do to help prevent cancer in themselves and that’s what I would like to talk about in this article today.

We can’t yet cure cancer but we do know many things that help prevent it. Unfortunately there is no quick fix and many of these techniques require major lifestyle changes from what most of us are used to today. They mainly have to deal with food, what we eat, and how we eat it which may not be music to most people’s ears.

Most studies show that eating less dietary fat can cut your risk of cancer dramatically in most cases. On the flip side, eating more dietary fat certainly raises the risk for certain cancers such as breast and colon and maybe even prostate.

It really basically just comes down to one thing. You should eat less of the foods that are known to increase your risk of cancer and you should eat more of the foods that help prevent it. So what foods are these?

Beef, pork, poultry, and fish consumption should be minimized as much is possible because they can be concentrated sources of dioxin, polychlorinated biphenyls and other carcinogens.

On the other hand, you should increase your consumption of vegetables and fruits as well as dietary fiber. Always wash your produce thoroughly if you can’t peel it completely. The jury is still out on whether or not organic food is better than regular food when it comes to produce but I tend to believe it is so I buy organic whenever possible.

Apart from eating more healthy you should also increase your consumption of water. A good rule of thumb is to drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day or roughly 4 tall glasses based on regular sized kitchen glasses. Water helps flush out carcinogens from your body and overall promotes good health.

Finally you should cut out as much processed foods as you possibly can because these foods almost always have a lot of trans fatty acids and also refined sugars and salts.

So there you have several very simple tips that almost anybody can use to help cut their risk of cancer, sometimes by as much as two thirds or more. If prevention is the name of the game then this is clearly the first play in the playbook.

Conventional Mesothelioma cancer treatment consists mainly of three main options- surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.

Newer medical therapies that are been discovered include the use of more targeted therapies that address the biological factors triggering mesothelioma growth might be a much more precise and effective way to combat this notoriously difficult cancer.

Mesothelioma is so difficult to treat properly because most often by the time it is diagnosed it is already in an advanced stage, and because it can take many biological forms. Current mesothelioma treatments were originally designed for other types of cancers, without considering factors that may be specific to mesothelioma. That may be why many patients only partially respond to treatment, and the average survival is just 12 months after diagnosis.

More specific “targeted therapies” that address the mechanisms that drive disease progression may actually provide a better means of prolonging the average life span of mesothelioma patients. “The term ‘targeted therapy’ refers to a new generation of anti-cancer drugs designed to interfere with a specific molecular ‘target,’ most often a protein or a receptor that is believed to have a critical role in tumor growth,” says lead study author Katalin Dobra, MD, PhD, a researcher in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.

“Targeted cancer therapy takes advantage of our recent knowledge of the key mechanism that the malignant [cancerous] cell needs for its survival, and uses the special properties of mesothelioma cells to design novel therapeutic strategies,” Dr. Dobra says.

The process starts with molecular screening to identify the characteristics of a tumor and how it behaves, what causes it to grow and spread. Then researchers test various therapies on cells in the laboratory to see if they can interfere with that process. Not until then can a new cure be tested on patients in clinical trials.

So far, Dr. Dobra’s team has identified three possible molecular targets, each with its own potential treatment:

• Proteasome-subunits are groups of enzymes that regulate cell progression and death. Potential treatment: Drugs called proteasome inhibitors have been shown to halt the growth of mesothelioma cells.

• The thioredoxin system contains components that are produced differently in cancerous and noncancerous mesothelial cells, and it is thought to contribute to the survival of mesothelioma cells. Potential treatment: In collaboration with other groups, Dr. Dobra has shown that the mineral selenite may trigger mesothelioma cell death while sparing healthy cells.

• Proteoglycans (PGs) are a class of proteins that differ based on the type of mesothelioma cell. They work by affecting the growth factors that help mesothelioma cells grow and divide. Potential treatment: Oligosaccharide sequences, which are made up of chains of sugar molecules, might interfere with the work of PGs.

One of these targeted approaches, proteasome inhibitors, is now being tested in clinical trials. The other two methods are also promising, but more research is needed before they can be tested on patients. Additional tumor targets are also being investigated.

The next step in the research is to combine various treatments-both traditional and experimental-to see which ones are most effective at targeting mesothelioma tumors, Dr. Dobra says. Attacking the tumors from as many different approaches as possible may offer the greatest benefit to mesothelioma patients.

When it comes to the current state of pet cancer, there’s good news and bad news. First, the bad news: cancer, in all its various forms, is the #1 disease-related cause of death among pets.

Now, the good news: pet owners now have more treatment options available to fight the disease. And today’s treatment advances mean that pets with cancer have a much better chance of survival. Plus, companies that provide quality pet health insurance, such as Pets Best, are providing pet owners with the financial ability to pay for the most effective treatments in the battle against cancer.

In fact, in 2008 Pets Best paid out almost $2 million—more than ever before—to pet owners for cancer-related claims.

And that’s not all; in its commitment to conquering pet cancer, Pets Best has taken unprecedented steps to educate pet owners about the disease and to provide care and support for those who need it. They’ve partnered with Pet Cancer Foundation, together with Oncura Partners, to provide any pet owner in the United States with a free initial consultation with a pet oncologist (cancer specialist) for their dog or cat who has cancer.

Pets Best developed a website [http://www.petcancerfoundation.org/index.html] for the Pet Cancer Foundation, to let pet owners know they’re not alone in the fight, to provide a resource for learning about the disease and to help inform people about available treatment options.

Plus, Pets Best is part of an exclusive club—one that includes the Pfizer drug company—of $1 million “Superheroes” who have pledged to help the Morris Animal Foundation Cure Canine Cancer in the next 10 to 20 years.

Want to help Pets Best defeat pet cancer once and for all? The company urges you to join them in supporting the Morris Animal Foundation’s efforts by contributing to the campaign at www.curecaninecancer.org.
