The sad truth is that there are a number of harmful myths surrounding periodontal disease. In order to crush those misconceptions, you have to recognize and respect the link between dentistry and periodontal disease. You can protect your teeth and gums a lot. However, you cannot do it solely on your own. You need the help of your dentist. Thus, we are going to address some of the more pervasive myths revolving around gum disease — and how your dentist can help you recognize the truth instead of the myth.

Unbelievably, a lot of people inexplicably believe that it is perfectly normal to lose your teeth as you age. The truth is that tooth loss can be a symptom of periodontal disease. It is neither normal or natural, and if it occurs, it is crucial to contact your dentist at once.

Sadly, people with gum disease are often viewed as dirty. We assume that they simply do not take care of themselves or their teeth. This is hurtful and untrue. The real truth is that gum disease can be a genetic trait. You should not feel ashamed if you have gum disease. You should simply talk to your dentist.

There is another myth your dentist can help debunk. It is the belief that your general, overall health will not be at all affected by gum disease. In fact, this myth is potentially lethal. In truth, periodontal disease will result in many severe problems if it is left untreated.

No matter what you have been led to believe, your gums should not be bleeding. That is a warning sign. It could point towards periodontal disease. See your dentist immediately if it occurs.

Dentistry is an important aspect of discovering and treating periodontal disease. You have to see your dentist regularly. It can mean the difference between healthy teeth and gums, or suffering from more severe problems. However, you must also pay attention to home care to be successful. Next: Learn how to stop gum disease and prevent it from coming back again, follow the links below.

Our teeth are one of the strongest parts of our entire body, and have been designed in such a way that it may last a lifetime. However the wear and tear often results in tooth loss or chipped or discolored teeth. This causes a dent in an individual’s self esteem and a solution is quickly sought after. Porcelain veneers are small ceramic plates that are fitted into a person’s teeth to improve appearance.

Also called ‘instant orthodontics’ these thin porcelain shields are used to cover the front of the teeth and are put on the teeth as a permanent measure to cover up stained, chipped, broken or other defects of the teeth. They are also used to fill gaps between teeth. The two types of veneer are ‘porcelain veneer’ and ‘composite resin veneer’. Resin is a filling material which is close to the color of one’s tooth and is used to hide a filling once it is complete. Resin can also be used to create veneers to cover a tooth. On the other hand ceramic veneers are thin porcelain shields that are put on the front surface of the tooth.

The two primary reasons why porcelain veneers are at an advantage over resin veneers are:

Porcelain veneers look much more natural and appealing

Porcelain veneers are much more durable and stains less than resin veneers

Application of veneers requires preparing the teeth before the procedure and dentists also advise about how to correct a particular dental problem. A particular dentist applying veneers in an Agoura Hills porcelain veneers case even used imaging software to give his patient an idea about how he will look after the treatment! Depending on what type of veneer is being used and also the position of the tooth, your doctor may want to remove the enamel of your tooth. Temporary covers are placed on the teeth whose enamel has been removed, to prevent it from getting damaged. A suitable color has to be chosen for the veneer to see if it matches the natural teeth color. The final appointment with the dentist will see the permanent veneer being fixed with a special strong adhesive. Special care needs to be taken to ensure that the adhesive is placed in the correct position.

Taking care of these veneers is not very difficult since they are a permanent solution for your teeth. However it is advisable that one brushes their teeth twice daily as with regular teeth. Biting nails or opening food packets with your teeth should be abstained from.

When you want to have that brighter smile that makes people smile back at you having your teeth whitened is an option that you should consider. Having a smile that you are proud of makes you a happier person over all and you exude confidence.

Working as a dentist smiles are my business. Over the years I have investigated many different options for my patients and I have tried them all on myself. I have finally settled on LumiBrite from DenMat LLC in California.

The LumiBrite Teeth Whitening I have found is what patients want from teeth whitening procedure. The procedure takes about 30 mins and unlike other in chair whitening the LumiBrite system is the most pain free of all the whitening systems I have tried and my patients endorse this view on a regular basis.

There are several steps to having the procedure, one of the most important is to have your teeth scaled prior to the procedure which makes the teeth more receptive to the teeth whitening. I then protect the gums with a mouth guard and paste to cover the gums. We then apply the Lumibrite Paste to all the exposed teeth. Then we apply the crystal from the LumiBrite Plasma Lamp which then treats the teeth for 30 minutes.

The real feed back from patients has been how they don’t feel the “zinging” sensation which they have felt from other whitening products. My most importan rule when deciding on products and procedures for patients is I strive for the most pain free and non-invasive I can find.

I am the first dentist in Romania who is qualified to provide patients Lumineers. I have been a dentist in Romania for 8 years. I created my first practice which is has now grown to 3 surgeries and I have recently opened a new dental practice in Gorneti where I have one surgery. I currently employ 2 other dentists and I am looking for a third. Later this year I hope to open another dental practice here in Romania followed by my first one overseas in the UK where I am a GDC Approved dentist as well.

Dental floss is a bunch of thin plastic ribbon that is used for removing food particles and plaque from the teeth. The dental floss is inserted between the teeth and is scraped along the sides of teeth. Flossing can remove much of the unhealthy plaque build-up from our teeth.

Next to brushing, flossing is the most important thing that you can do to ensure good oral health.

The purpose of both brushing and flossing is to reduce the number of bacteria which inhabit our mouth. Normally, millions of these micro-organisms feed on food particles left on our teeth.

Each tooth has five surfaces and only by using dental floss, can reach them. Your toothbrush cannot reach them. Flossing removes the bacteria that escape the toothbrush by hiding in the tiny spaces in between teeth. Brushing without flossing is like washing only 65% of your body. The other 35% remains dirty. Dentists recommend that you floss at least once a day.

Benefits of flossing, include:

1. Helps remove bad breath.

2. Protects people from gingivitis.

3. Protects from heart attack.

4. Prevents the formation of tartar.

5. Protects from tooth loss.

Effective flossing can only be done if you allow the dental floss to clean that portion of each tooth’s surface that lies below the gum line. The dental plaque that occupies this region is the plaque that will have most to do with the health of the gum tissue surrounding the tooth.

If you notice that your gums bleed when you floss it is a sign that you are not flossing regularly enough, or else you are using a improper flossing technique. Even then, you should not discontinue the use of dental floss. Even if after a week of correct flossing you still see that gums are bleeding, you should consult with a Dentist.

The Mews Dental Studio, http://www.themewsdentalstudio.co.uk, is Southampton’s only Specialist Dental referral centre specialising in Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery and Practice limited to Endodontics.

Do you often awake with a dull headache or a sore jaw? Do you sometimes find yourself clenching your teeth? Until you have a dental checkup or go to your dentist with pain you will not realize that you have a condition called “Bruxism”. This is a habit of grinding or clenching the teeth.

Many people are unaware that they clench or grind their teeth because they often do it when they sleep. The clenching or grinding can be quite audible. Some people make no sounds and it is diagnosed by their dentist who notices wearing of their teeth in certain areas. Aside from awaking with a headache, a person who clenches or grinds may also have an earache and or toothache.

They may also have sore jaw muscles or joint pain. This joint pain or “TMJ” affects the muscles on each side of the mouth which connects the lower jaw to the skull. This grinding or clenching can also affect the fillings in your mouth. Wearing away of the fillings and enamel of the teeth causes sensitivity. It can also cause loosening of the teeth, cracking of a filling or tooth, and even tooth loss.

Although bruxism can develop at any age, the causes are not really known. Several factors may be involved: stress, problems sleeping, abnormal bite or crooked or missing teeth may contribute.

Grinding is a common occurrence for many people at one time or another. If you routinely have the symptoms, see your dentist.

Based on your dentist’s diagnosis, one or more treatments may be recommended. He may suggest a night guard that can be wore while sleeping. These are custom made by the dentist and they relieve some of the pressure of grinding and clenching.

If thought appropriate, relaxation exercises are a way to relieve stress and reduce the problem. Warm, wet compresses and light music are two of the methods practiced to relieve this problem.

The treatment for gum disease is usually just a matter of doing the things that you should have been doing to prevent it in the first place, maintaining an effective oral hygiene routine. Gingival disease, or periodontal disease is caused by the build up of plaque on the teeth and gums. Plaque is a thick material that occurs naturally in the mouth. The problems happen when this material is allowed to remain on the teeth.

The plaque itself is not really the problem, it is the bacteria that live in the plaque that causes the damage. If the plaque is removed on a regular basis this bacteria does not have the chance to build up the numbers to do any damage. If they remain, they will release a toxin that is hazardous to the gums.

Periodontal disease is broken into two main categories. The more mild cases are called gingivitis. The symptoms at this stage are red and swollen gums and bleeding when brushing. The more advanced cases are called periodontitis. At this stage the gums pull back, making the teeth appear longer. If not treated promptly at this stage it is likely that the infection will spread to the bones of the mouth and face.

To prevent gum disease you must adopt a stringent routine of brushing and flossing. That is also the recommended treatment for gingivitis. It is also important to keep regular appointments with the dentist. He will not only be able to give you teeth a thorough cleaning, but he may recognize the symptoms of gum disease earlier than you so that preventative measures can be taken.

Once gum disease has reached the level of periodontitis more treatment may be necessary. Antibiotics will probably be prescribed to battle the bacterial build up. The dentist may do a more intense cleaning designed to clean below the gum line. In the worst cases, it may be necessary to do surgery to fix the damage done and keep any more from happening. Don’t let this happen to you if you can avoid it!

We typically think of our mouth as a vehicle for talking and eating. We overlook caring for it while attracting bacteria day in and day out. Some bad bacteria can attack your gums and teeth. This could start the early stages of gum disease, also medically termed periodontal disease, if not looked after.

This disease starts out with plaque build up. The plaque sticks to your teeth and at first is not visible to you. If you don’t make regular trips to a dentist who will usually scrape it off during cleaning, then it can build up over time at extreme stages. When this happens it turns into a hard substance known as tarter. When tarter builds up it can only be removed during a cleaning as it is too hard for you to scrape away.

In the early stages of gum disease, you will experience swelling of the gums, and maybe light bleeding as you brush. This stage is called gingivitis. Overtime, if you haven’t sought treatment, the bone and tissue deteriorate, and teeth often become loose and may need to be removed, or they eventually fall out. This stage is called periodontitis.

Another sign that goes along with this is bad breath. To prevent this from happening, the starting place is protecting your gums.

In most cases you can prevent gum disease. The rule of thumb for good oral hygiene allows you to take matters into your own hands. Brush after every meal, include flossing.

Maintain a regular schedule for cleaning with your Dentist, twice a year is the norm. Even if you have noticed early stages of gum disease, a quick trip to your Dentist who will begin the necessary diagnostic in treatment will help you fight this off.

The good news is that gum disease is preventable. Attention to everyday oral hygiene including brushing, flossing and cleanings by your professional two times a yearly may be the steps necessary to prevention. You may however, need additional preventive techniques that go beyond mere brushing and flossing.
