Disability made easier

22 Tips on how to do it

After years of experience I can still never say that I have arrived and know everything about disability or how to cope with or combat it. One thing I have learnt is that disabilities vary vastly from person to person, even if diagnosed with the same disease, disability or condition (we won’t pursue the other synonyms in this article. That is an article on its own.)

I was once told by a very wise doctor that the reason for my sudden and unexplained falling was that I was tripping over my own pride. You see pride was getting in the way of me using the numerous aids at my disposal in order to avoid these sudden mishaps. Once I overcame my pride and removed the perceived stigmas attached to these devices, I fell less often, until eventually I parked my stubborn backside in a wheelchair. Hey Presto ———– no more falling. Continue reading ‘Disabled: Disability made easier in 22 steps’ »

The GED gives adults who didn’t graduate high school the opportunity they need to qualify for college and for more and better jobs. Taking the GED, though, can be difficult for people with disabilities. If you have a disability, it shouldn’t stop you from taking the GED and showing what you know. The GED Testing Service provides special test-taking accommodations for GED students with many types of disabilities.

Most people think of physical disabilities, when they think of test-taking accommodations. The GED provides accommodations for people with many types of disabilities, though, including physical disabilities, emotional and mental health disabilities, learning disabilities, and ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). The GED testing center can provide extended time, an audiocassette version, a braille test version, a calculator for the second math test, a talking calculator for the entire math test, a private room, supervised frequent breaks, or other accommodations specific to the disability. Wheelchairs mean so much to those with limited mobility. Thanks to wheelchairs those with limited movement can become more mobile and regain their independence. There are two main kind of wheelchairs and these are the manual wheelchair and the electric wheelchair.

Manual Wheelchair
The manual wheelchair has been in use for decades and has gone through many revisions. The constant feature has been that the chair is self propelled by pushing on the hand rims that encircle the wheels. The user actually pushes the wheels around and around to get from a place to place. Further more, the footrests to a manual wheelchair can be removed and the user can walk the chair forward with his feet. Continue reading ‘Electric wheelchair’ »

Surgeons are constantly trying to improve the quality of hip replacement in this context a new version of hip procedure has been introduced it is called Minimally invasive Mini-hip replacement and now it is successfully being provided in India by orthopedic specialists of Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Mini Hip Replacement Surgery is among the most successful orthopedic procedures available today for curing minor hip fractures. The goal of the two-incision hip replacement is to provide a procedure that has less surgical morbidity (meaning less pain, less blood loss, less rehabilitation), but as good, or better overall results. Each year many doctors from India undertake surgical training abroad, particularly the United States and Europe for getting expertise in the procedure of Minimally invasive Mini-hip replacement.

Minimally invasive Mini-hip replacement is a new procedure used to accomplish a hip replacement. Mini-hip replacement surgery uses two small incisions and less surgical dissection. Minimally invasive mini hip replacement is done through an incision that is usually about 5 to 8 inches in length. Beneath the incision, the muscle is separated, and the hip joint is exposed. The surgeon then removes the arthritic hip joint, and replaces this with a metal and plastic implant. The surgeon performs this surgery by looking directly at joint, and setting the artificial hip implant into place. After surgery, patients commonly stay in the hospital for 4 to 6 days, and often require months of rehabilitation. Care for the elderly in Islamic culture

In Islam, care for those who lose the ability to care for themselves is mainly carried out by the immediate family and is considered a religious duty. It is the responsibility of children to take care of their parents when they are old or ill, because gratitude to parents is linked with gratitude to Allah (God).  Failure in either of these is a major failurein one’s religious duties. However, immigration to Western societies can remove access to extended family members on whom the elderly previously relied for support (Fazil et al, 2002). Thus increasing numbers of elderly Muslims in the UK may well look to the social and health-care services, including residential homes, to replace this support.

Cultural considerations for care providers

To gain the trust of the elderly and their families, care service providers need to understand and cater for some important Muslim practices, including those associated with: prayer duties, modesty, gender issues and bodily contact, fasting at Ramadan, and dietary restrictions and preferences. In addition, care providers should be aware of the timing of two important Muslim holidays:Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Continue reading ‘Care for the elderly in Islamic culutre’ »
