High blood pressure (hypertension) is among the first causes of stroke. Almost 70% of all strokes are caused by hypertension, the statistics say. Moreover a person with hypertension is four times more likely to have stroke than a person with healthy blood pressure.

Having read the above, you probably have at least a few questions ready in your mind. We have tried to answer them below.

What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the measurement of the force that the blood exercises over the arteries walls when passing through. If the hypertension is high the blood is putting extra pressure to the artery walls.

What causes hypertension?
Hypertension is caused by various factors including an unhealthy diet (including a lot of salt and fats), obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, stress, drinking abuse, drug abuse, high cholesterol, family history of cardiovascular problems, diabetes, gender (men are more likely to suffer from hypertension).

Why hypertension is a risk factor for stroke?
Hypertension has different effects over the human body. It can accelerate the effect of atherosclerosis (narrowing the walls of the blood vessels because of build-up of fatty plaques). These plaques can be off the artery walls and can block the blood supply to the brain and to cause a stroke. In addition chronic hypertension weakens the walls of the blood vessels which increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding within the brain). In other cases hypertension helps thicken artery walls due to the constant strain applied which reduces their flexibility and makes them fragile and easy to rupture. This may also result into a stroke.

What shall I do to prevent stoke if I have high blood pressure?

First of all ask your doctor to carry the required tests and estimate the severity of the problem. He will prescribe you some medications that will normalize your blood pressure. If you have close relatives suffering from cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure in particular, start making regular checks early. One of the great dangers is that many people suffer from hypertension and don’t even realize it this is due to the fact that there are no symptoms at the begging. A healthy diet will greatly help improve not only your overall health but the health of your cardiovascular system. A low-salt diet rich of fibers is great for this purpose. However consult with a specialist and don’t just apply a diet of your own. Try to reduce stress as much as possible. Quit smoking. Smoking is a stroke factor on its own and on the top of this it is among the risk factors for high blood pressure. The substances contained in cigarette smoke increase the blood pressure, increase the cholesterol levels and harm oxygen supply

You may be surprised to learn that active vitamin D is actually a hormone. Vitamin D receptors have been found in the brain, heart, skin, and white blood cells. The reproductive organs such as the ovaries, breasts, testes, and prostate gland also contain vitamin D receptors.

Vitamin D performs several functions in your body. It has long been known that vitamin D regulates calcium and phosphorous in the bloodstream and promotes bone formation and mineralization. New research is revealing the role vitamin D plays in the immune system. For example, vitamin D enhances phagocytosis, a process by which certain white blood cells engulf bacteria, dead cells, and other debris. Vitamin D also plays a role in preventing autoimmune diseases. Low vitamin D has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and fibromyalgia. People who suffer from muscle and chronic pain, psoriasis, heart disease, and breast, prostate, and colon cancers are also more likely to have low vitamin D levels.

Perhaps the most exciting research about vitamin D is its ability to prevent some cancers. Vitamin D appears to play a role in cell proliferation (division) and differentiation (making sure dividing cells don’t become cancerous cells). In addition, vitamin D is involved in proper death of unhealthy or old cells, a process known as “apoptosis,” and in the prevention of blood vessel formation to feed existing cancers, known as “angiogenesis.”

The first randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluating vitamin D supplementation and the incidence of cancer was published, in 2007—in that study, women using 1100 IU of vitamin D3 daily for 4 years had a 60% lower cancer risk than the placebo group. When patients who were diagnosed with cancer during the first year of the study were excluded (with the assumption that they likely had cancer when they entered the study), the reduction was 77%. This is exciting news since there aren’t many supplements that have been shown to lower cancer risk by such a large margin.
Vitamin D is also an important anti-aging hormone since it actually slows the shortening of your telomeres —the end segments of chromosomes that protect your DNA. Optimal vitamin D levels are thought to slow your speed of aging by at least 5 years.

Your skin makes vitamin D from exposure to the sun. As you age, however, your skin becomes less able to make vitamin D. When taking vitamin D, it’s important to measure and monitor vitamin D levels closely. Too much vitamin D can cause calcification of soft tissues and an increased risk of kidney stones. It’s especially important to monitor your levels if you are supplementing with doses greater than 2,000 IU of D3 per day.

You will be forgiven to think that the only way you can increase your cardio capacity, burn out calories and lose weight is by jumping up and down on a treadmill, or by cycling on a regular basis. While these are good forms of exercise, they tend to exert too much pressure on your joints, and as a result cause less gain and more pain. If you have tried many exercise equipment and have never tried an elliptical machine, you have no reason not to.

During the 80s, cross-country ski machines came into being, replacing stationary bikes and treadmills. This is because the machines allowed health fans to exercise and reap more benefit in very little time. Even though the cross-country machines were outstanding, most people found the movements somewhat aberrant hence a bit taxing to practice.

It is because of this that health and fitness machine manufacturers thought they could modify the design to simulate what people in normal day to day life do; step, walk, cycle and ski, but this time in an elliptical motion. The manufacturers believed that an elliptical motion will produce very little or even no impact at all. As a result, people will work out more, and burn out more calories without necessarily getting tired or getting burnt out more easily.

It is normal to question the effectiveness of an elliptical machine to burn calories. Conversely, thousands of elliptical machines are available in the market today, and how effective the machines are in burning out calories vary from one machine to another. Manufacturers of certain brands claim that the machine can burn more than 700 calories per hour. While this may, or may not be true, burning of calorie entirely depends on whoever is using the machine i.e. the effort one exerts and the time one invests in working out. It is however right to say that calorie-burning rate can be equaled to the cross country ski machine rates.

An elliptical machine has its own share of advantages and disadvantages. First off, it can be used for any fitness level, by any age group and it works out the entire body in the shortest time possible. Since it has low-impact exercise, the machine is fit even for the elderly. The machine produces very little noise; hence you don’t have to miss your favorite program on TV or radio just because you are exercising.

The disadvantages emanate from the advantages. Since it is easy to use it, people tend to misuse it; they forget the meaning of warming up. Others tend to exercise their heart rates to the maximum. Due to lack of impact, the entire workout may burn few calories if less effort is used. When purchasing an elliptical machine, it is always advisable to ‘road test’ it first, even if it means going shopping dressed in your workout gear. There are various models and brands available, just look at the features and find one that fits your budget perfectly well. Above all, consult your doctor and discuss if the machine and the workout it will give you is fit for your health.

What type of fitness equipment are you looking for? A treadmill equipment or rowing machines?

Though many woman dread that yearly mammogram, we’ve all heard often enough that early detection of breast cancer saves lives… finding lumps when they’re too small to feel and before they get a chance to grow and spread gives you the best chance for a cure.

Or does it?

A recent study of mammography screening for breast cancer found that some invasive cancers might spontaneously regress over time, leaving no sign that they were ever present in a woman’s body.

This leaves us to question if breast cancer is over diagnosed, and therefore over treated.

The research, conducted by Norwegian scientists, used 119,472 female subjects aged 50 to 64 years, who underwent three rounds of mammography (one mammogram every two years) from 1996 to 2001 as part of the Norwegian Breast Cancer Screening Program.

The cancer rates in this group were compared with the cancer rates of 109,784 control subjects who would have been screened if the program existed back in 1992. The control subjects were invited to have a one-time mammogram at the end of the observation period.

The team had expected that no matter when they were detected, the number of breast cancer tumors would ultimately be the same between the regularly screened group and the never screened controls.

As the researchers expected, the 4-year cumulative incidence of invasive breast cancer in the screened group was higher than in the non-screened control group – 1268 vs. 810 cases per one thousand women.

However, the surprise finding of the research was that even after the one time mammography was given to the previously unscreened control group, the six year cumulative incidence of breast cancer in the mammography screened group was still higher – 1909 vs. 1564 cases per one thousand women.

The study authors couldn’t explain this.

There were no obvious differences between the two groups, and since that all important cumulative incidence of cancer in the control group never reached, even after one time screening, the mammography screened group of subjects, it lends support to the idea that some cancers found on repeat scans wouldn’t show up on a single scan at the end of six years.

The study authors note, “This raises the possibility that the natural course of some screen-detected invasive breast cancers is to spontaneously regress.”

Perhaps as many as one in five cancers detected by mammogram might, in fact, spontaneously resolve.

And since two out of three breast cancer tumors are estrogen driven, the drop off of the hormone as women age and go through menopause suggests that cancer cells are naturally starved of the very hormone they need to grow and thrive.

The tumors might disappear altogether or shrink and lie dormant. The discontinuation of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a treatment for menopausal symptoms and the dramatic decrease in breast cancer rates lends fuel to the idea that hormones may fuel the growth of some cancers.

While this study is absolutely not a recommendation to skip your yearly mammogram, it does raise an intriguing question about cancers that may resolve themselves… without our ever knowing or treating them.

“If the spontaneous remission hypothesis is credible, it could cause a major reevaluation in the approach to breast cancer research and treatment,” says cancer expert Dr. Robert M. Kaplan of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Dr. Franz Porzsolt, from the University of Ulm, Germany in a related story that appeared with the study.

In effect, it could in the future lead to an approach that is already used for a well known cancer in men, prostate cancer, where a “Watchful Waiting” approach is sometimes advised.

In Stage III prostate cancer, the cancer has spread beyond the prostate gland. It is now affecting nearby tissues but has not reached the bladder, lymph nodes, rectum, or other organs and structures of the body. Surgery and radiation therapy can be an option for Stage III prostate cancer, depending on the case; however, normally they are less likely to work at this stage.

Possible Treatment Options
Radiation therapy or surgery may not be an option at this stage of the cancer; it depends on the patient and that particular case of cancer for the doctors to decide. They still could be possibilities in some cases. In others, a combination of different treatment options could be prescribed. Below is a list of possible treatment options for Stage III cancer of the prostate.

• External radiation therapy (XRT) in combination with Hormone therapy
• Hormone therapy by itself
• Radical Prostatectomy
• Watchful waiting

Watchful waiting will normally be used in patients who are 70 years old and older. This type of usually grows at a slow pace, so in older patients many doctors may prefer to use this technique to see what the cancer is going to do and whether treatment is even necessary.

Hormone therapy slows the growth of the cancerous tumor. If the growth of the tumor can be slowed to a point that is acceptable, doctors may be comfortable in prescribing this treatment option by itself.
Hormone therapy tends to work better when it is used in combination with another treatment option. In Stage III prostate cancer, the recommendation is to perform hormone therapy in combination with external radiation therapy (XRT).

Stage III prostate cancer is considered to be treatable but the prognosis is not as good as the earlier stages of prostate cancer. Otherwise known as locally advanced prostate cancer, Stage III prostate cancer, if treated by radiation therapy options and hormone therapy, yields a 70% to 80% chance of a relative 5-year survival rate. In other words, 7 to 8 men out of every 10 have a chance of surviving longer than five years after the diagnosis has been made.

In the end, it is up to the patient whether to receive treatment for the cancer. Treatment is highly advisable and no prognosis should discourage the patient in any way. Feel free to ask your doctor any questions about any part of your diagnosis, treatment, side effects, and prognosis, or anything else that you may have a question about. This involves your life and you should know what treatment entails. Remember, new clinical trials are being conducted constantly and eventually there may be better techniques available that can offer better results.

Before we get to the main discussion, let’s see what a social anxiety disorder is. It is a social phobia. In more plain words, it refers to a mental state where people suffer the irrational fear of unsuccessfully facing some special social situations. The majority of the people suffer such disorder as they are afraid that they’ll do poor when judged/scrutinized by people in the society.

However, a cognitive therapy can be a really useful social anxiety disorder treatment. This article describes how such a therapy helps you recover from disorders that stemmed from social anxieties. For the recovery through a behavioral therapy, the following steps are followed.

Step 1 – Consider getting thorough diagnosis from a mental-health expert/professional. But before that, you must be able to research and diagnose the symptoms all by yourself… it least the primary stage. If your symptoms match with a social disorder, you should turn to the help of qualified professionals for getting the right social anxiety disorder treatment.

Step 2 – Make a long-term arrangement with a cognitive behavioral therapist, since you will need ongoing treatment sessions. For finding a dependable one, you can request your doctor for a reference.

Step 3 – Try and compose a solid, comprehensive plan to heal the disorder step by step.

Step 4 – Think out of the box. The cognitive therapy is all about reprogramming the mind for going through only positive modes. It aims at preparing the mind to positively handle itself along with the related social situations. In due course, this is supposed to establish an individual’s solid control over his or her fears.

Step 5 – Practice and execute coping statements properly. That is a surefire way for retraining the mind for repeating positive statements as your anxiety starts creeping in.

Step 6 – Get along with exposure therapy progressively. This is another effective component of behavioral therapy for altering your way of reaction to different kind of situations. The object of cognitive-behavioral therapies is to bring a change in your overall approach while reacting to special situations. Putting it simple, an exposure therapy basically exposes a person to unique situations causing anxiety. It also aims at providing you with a truly safe environment.

Step 7 – Take part actively in a group that is receiving cognitive therapies. In the majority of the cases cognitive social anxiety disorder therapy is executed by compiling the patients into small groups

Stick to that and take help from professionals.

Read my blog about panic anxiety disorders. I also share my how to stop panic attacks reviews.

Even in today’s enlightened employment environment, some people still have to go it alone. There are compelling reasons why it is a wise step for you to take.

You see, whilst dental services are pretty expensive at the best of times, if you are paying as you go along, it’s an easy temptation when you have other apparent priorities coming at your finances from all angles, to miss dental treatment out.

And that’s when it gets even trickier, because when you don’t have regular treatment that the option of ongoing dental insurance For individuals enables, you end up needing emergency treatment. And, because it’s unplanned, that gets costly.

That’s why dental insurance is not a luxury anymore. In fact it’s a less costly expenditure when you pay a regular amount than it would be if you were on a ‘pay as you go’ scheme. When it’s time to pay up for your vacation, or your vehicle is in the shop for urgent repairs, you just know where your priorities will lie.

And that’s where you will make the call to the dentists office and cancel your regular checkup. Then of course, next month will be the same and the problems will pile up.

Look, dental insurance for individuals can vary a lot in costs, so it will pay to shop around. And it’s important to realize that there are a number of providers in most countries who have proven track records for good value as well as quality of service.

Often you will need to think whether you want a full dental insurance package or one that takes some of the edge off the costs, which can be a great solution for those who don’t want to go the whole way.

It can give great peace of mind when you know that you don’t need a whole plan and you still have some concerns about unexpected costs coming at just the wrong time.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that if your employers doesn’t have a free plan, they may use their own buying power to help you pay less, so it’s always worth checking what they offer, even if it isn’t in your employee package.

The truth of the matter is that many people would feel a whole lot better from a good value ‘dental insurance for individuals’ package with a reputable track record so they can sleep well at night, in the knowledge that they are covered for events that might come without warning.

(c) 2007 Dental Insurance Guidance. If you want to find the right cover for your dental treatment, there are lots of great value options.

Contact lens sales are regulated by the FDA (Food And Drug Administration) and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission.) In the U.S. contact lens marketplace, 82 percent wear soft lenses, 16 percent wear rigid gas-permeable and only 2 percent wear hard. Among the many kinds of contact lenses you can buy are: novelty, colored, crazy, Halloween, special effects, theatrical, costume, scary, glow in the dark, wild eyes, mirrored, black, white, and red.

Before you buy contact lenses from anyone other than your eye care professional, it pays to be a wise consumer. You’ll want to take simple precautions to make any lens purchase safe and effective.

Disposable lenses don’t come with instructions for cleaning and disinfecting, while those labeled specifically for planned replacement do. People who have good distance vision but need help for reading can get a monovision reading lens for one eye. You can mark rigid lenses to show which lens is for which eye; they don’t rip or tear, so they’re easy to handle.

Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are more durable, resistant to deposit buildup, and generally give a clearer, crisper vision. It’s important for your eyes to have a rest, without lenses, for at least one night following each scheduled removal. If you plan to wear lenses for more than 18 hours for the purpose of eye color change, then buy colored soft lenses.

You can become adjusted to soft lenses within just a few days, compared to several weeks for rigid ones. There are two general categories of contact lenses – soft and rigid gas permeable. Rigid lenses generally give you more clear vision.

While the ability to hold water increases the oxygen permeability of soft lenses, it increases their fragility quotient as well. The length of continuous lens wear depends on the lens type and your doctor’s evaluation of your tolerance for overnight wear.
When you receive your order, if you think you’ve received an incorrect contact lens, check with your doctor or eye care professional right away; don’t accept any substitution unless your eye care professional approves it. If you have an insurance plan, the insurance plan’s seller’s prices may or may not be better than what you can find elsewhere; this should be just one option when you’re shopping for lenses. Compare prices – get quotes from two or three online and offline suppliers.

Make sure you have a current, valid prescription when you order contact lenses. Wherever you buy, shop for quality and value and don’t forget you want to do what’s best for your eye health. Buy your contact lenses from a supplier you’re familiar with and know is reliable or has name familiarity

Carefully check to make sure the company gives you the exact brand you ordered, the name of the lens, the power, sphere, cylinder, if any, axis, if any, diameter base curve, and peripheral curves, if any. When you place your order make sure your lenses are available and not out of stock, because you’ll need them now. Check out how long the online supplier has been in business before you buy.

The use of homemade saline made by using salt tablets mixed in water is one of the biggest contributors to Acanthamoeba keratitis in contact lens wearers: the FDA no longer condones the use of salt tablets. Getting a proper fit is essential; contact lenses that are poorly fitted can lead to eyesores, eye inflammation, and eye abrasions. Be aware that extended-wear (overnight) contact lenses – rigid or soft – increase the risk of corneal ulcers, which are infection-caused eruptions on the cornea that can lead to blindness; symptoms include vision changes, eye redness, eye discomfort or pain, and excessive tearing.

Don’t wear lenses any longer than they’re prescribed for, nor when sleeping unless you are otherwise directed. Under the binding down of a rigid contact lens during sleep, the flow of tears and oxygen to the cornea is reduced; lack of oxygen leaves the eye vulnerable to infection. Extended-wear rigid lenses can cause unexpected, undesirable, reshaping of the cornea.

It’s becoming easier and easier all the time to shop online and often the shipping is free. If you lead an active lifestyle, contact lenses can provide you with close to natural vision. Remember to use only contact lenses that are FDA-approved and only if prescribed by a licensed eyecare professional.
