Men do not always talk about their health concerns to each other. It is part of their wanting to keep that macho image. They think discussing these kinds of things is a sign of weakness. That is why illnesses and diseases as serious as prostate cancer are often left unnoticed and untreated.

Cancer is caused by the sudden development of cancerous cells in the prostate gland. It happens when some cells in prostate gland start to divide and spread in a disorganized, uncontrolled and chaotic manner.

Symptoms of prostate cancer often occur when the cancer is already on its advanced form. Most of the symptoms are evident in a man’s urination activity. Some of them include: frequent need to urinate but inability to start urinating, difficulty in urinating, painful sensation when urinating, blood in semen/urine, and frequent stiffness or pain in the hips, thighs and lower back.

Prostate cancer is serious and the second most common form of cancer death in males in America. Is genetic testing for this cancer possible?

Certain cancers have well established genetic components, the best known being breast cancer and the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. The first prostate cancer gene was discovered way back in 1996 by a team of Swedish and US scientists. Genetic research and techniques have enormously expanded since then, and although other genes involved have been identified, their exact roles have not been uncovered.

In studies of men, their genetic profiles, and prostate cancer, statistically significant relationships have been discovered. However, some prostate cancers are slow growing and even harmless while others are very aggressive and deadly. The tests have not been able to distinguish these. Also there are concerns of privacy. What if companies and health care providers used these test results to help determine whether to offer employment or insurance. Even if illegal, these types of crimes have occurred in the past. And other concern is worry: a man who, with current testing technology, was shown to be at a high risk could worry needlessly. The April 2009 issue of Clinical Cancer Research will hold some exciting and hopeful news for men with prostate cancer or who have a history of prostate cancer in their family. University of California researchers and professors have teamed up to reveal some potentially life changing news for men who are at a high risk for prostate cancer: even if you have a genetic tendency toward developing prostate cancer (called a cox-2 genetic predisposition to the disease), eating a healthy diet with a substantial amount of omega 3 fatty acids in your daily food intake can dramatically decrease your odds of developing this illness1. Even though the actual study will not be released until April of 2009, the U.S. News and World Report released a summary of the results of the study and spoke with several of the researchers involved in the trials.

It turns out that omega 3 fatty acids, essential nutrients that your body cannot function without but must ingest in their fully compound form in order to benefit from, are critical to preventing prostate cancer whether you have a genetic tendency toward the health issue or not. This has been suspected for many years because omega 3 fatty acids, which are commonly found in salmon oil, are anti-inflammatory agents, which can help keep cells from “going bad” and turning into cancer cells when they are under stress from a variety of external and internal factors.

However, the news that omega 3 fatty acid can actually substantially decrease the odds of a man who is predisposed to prostate cancer of getting the disease is very exciting since previously knowing that one was predisposed to the disease generally simply meant one had to be extremely vigilant and hope to catch the problem before it became serious once it had occurred. There are many positive measures that you can take to maintain excellent prostate health. Here are 4 practical tips to implement in your daily life.

1) Lose your Belly Fat

Aim to keep your waistline trim. Fat in the body results in a lowering of Prostate Specific Antigen ( PSA) that circulates in the blood stream. When your Doctor checks your PSA levels to determine if you do have prostate cancer – an excess of weight may result in a skewing of test results.

2) Enjoy the sunshine!

Contrary to what you may have heard the sun isn`t all bad. In the US research carried out on men living within the sunniest states found a 32% lower risk rate of prostate cancer. This is believed to be as a result of Vitamin D, which we can get from the sun. However, if you are worried about damage to skin from the sun, you can get your Vitamin D requirements from Cod Liver Oil instead. Doctors and researchers believe there are certain factors that raise your chances of getting the disease. These are called risk factors for prostate cancer. Doctors cannot explain why one man gets prostate cancer and another does not, but they do know that no one can “catch” prostate cancer from another person.

Dietary factors likely play a role in fatal cases, while hormones are also important in regulating its growth. Diet and lifestyle are also believed to influence men’s development of the disease. Men who eat more red meat are believed to be more likely to develop the condition, while those who have more vegetables and fruits in their regular diet have a lower chance rate. Dietary amounts of certain foods, vitamins, and dietary minerals can contribute to prostate cancer risk. Men with higher serum levels of the short-chain omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid have higher rates of prostate cancer. Continue reading ‘Prostate Cancer Help – How to Deal With It’ »
