Effectively using resources, understanding addiction treatment – An alcohol or substance abuse treatment counselor can only be effective as the knowledge and experience they have. It is essential to be able to apply a varying amount of philosophies in any given circumstance during addiction treatment. Individualized care for addicts has to be taken into consideration. Because all backgrounds and personalities are unique, the recovery path should be as well.

Caring genuinely, overcoming objections in rehab – Individuals suffering from addiction generally have a sense while in treatment to recognize genuine caring, or lack thereof coming from clinical staff. Because the work done in treatment is often difficult and very self-disclosing, addicts will look for reasons to avoid and isolate. A lack of interest in a client’s success will cause an immediate incongruency and foster excuses from treatment. The report, in the September 2009 edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute estimates 1.3 million additional men have been diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer since 1987. Authors claim most of this group are likely to have been overdiagnosed.

“Given the considerable time that has passed since PSA screening began, most of this excess incidence must represent overdiagnosis,” the authors write. “All overdiagnosed patients are needlessly exposed to the hassle factors of obtaining treatment, the financial implications of the diagnosis, and the anxieties associated with becoming a cancer patient…”

The increased diagnosis has been most dramatic among younger men: more than tripling since 1986 in men aged 50-59 (from 58.4 to 212.7 per 100, 000) and more than a sevenfold increase in men under age 50 (from 1.3 to 9.4 per 100,000). Whenever a patient’s platelet levels drop below 50,000 per microliter of blood, he’s considered at risk for excessive bleeding. If his level drops below 10,000, he’s in need of immediate medical attention. (For more information on blood counts, see Understanding Low Red Blood Counts.) Between 50,000 and 10,000, though, you’ll be playing the waiting game, watching to see if his platelet count begins to rise, while protecting him from injury.

Start by thinking through the patient’s daily activities, looking for any that might put him at risk for injury. Then discuss ways he can take precautions to prevent bleeding:

* Assign someone else to do the cutting and chopping in the kitchen.

* Always wear gloves while gardening and also while working with tools. (If he likes to do minor repairs around the house, see if you can talk him into letting someone else handle the hammer for now.)

* Avoid activities that could lead to injury, such as bicycling.

* Allow someone else to cut toenails and fingernails, especially if neuropathy is affecting his hand coordination.

* Wear shoes or slippers at all times for foot protection.

* Don’t use razors (use an electric shaver instead).

* Use a soft-bristle toothbrush. Continue reading ‘Managing Treatment For Low Platelets’ »

The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the cause of both genital and non-genital warts. This is a very common family of viruses. There are actually more than 100 different strains of HPV. Of these, approximately 30 exist in the genital area and can cause genital warts (condyloma acuminata). These 30 strains can be further broken down to “high” and “low” risk strains.

High risk strains may cause changes in a Pap smear which may rarely progress to cancer. There are approximately 13 high-risk strains of HPV, of which two (16 & 18) are believed to cause about 70% of all cervical cancer. Low risk strains sometimes cause changes in a Pap smear, but do not progress to cancer. Of the low-risk strains, two (6 &11) are most likely to cause genital warts. Q: Why have some a difficult name?

As if being diagnosed with cancer isn’t bad enough, most people are more than a little frustrated that they can’t even pronounce the name of it. “Me..so..thee..lee..ohma” is not a name just conjured from the air. Instead, it gets its name from the part of the body where the cancer tends to manifest – the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a lining found in the chest cavity and abdomen. It surrounds most organs including the heart and lungs. The lining consists of two layers with a lubricant between them. When the heart beats or the lungs take in air, the mesothelium lets them move without damaging one another. Continue reading ‘Mesothelioma: Common Questions and Answers’ »

A vaccine which was originally developed to combat the herpes virus attacks cancerous tumors causing skin cancer, a therapy helping patients to fully cure from melanoma, according to some American researchers, even at an advanced stage.

What has really surprised and encouraged us was to see that this vaccine Onco VEX did not addressed only to cells that were injected, but worked on cells in other parts of the body that we could not reach, said Dr. Howard Kaufman from the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In other words, the vaccine triggered an immune response that spreads throughout the body thanks to the bloodstream. Mr. Kaufman is now well prepared to launch a Phase III clinical trials, which will involved 430 patients across the United States. During Phase II, fifty patients with melanoma at the stage of metastasis have been vaccinated. Eight of them have fully recovered and four partially responded positively to the treatment.
