Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating, there’s nothing like the impact of those three little words, “you have cancer.” I know this only too well as a 10-year survivor and as someone whose Mom, Dad, Aunts and Grandpa have battled with the disease.

At the time of my diagnosis I was shell shocked, as most of us are. I was even more confused by the variety of treatment choices offered me. Decisions about a lumpectomy or mastectomy, a TRAM flap or silicone or saline implants were all part of this challenging time.

While I’m a big proponent of having choice, after all, it is our body, it was one of the few times in my life where I would have loved to have passed off the decisions to someone else. But that wasn’t an option and so I made my own decision, after lots of reading and interviewing.

While no one had an issue with my choices, this isn’t always the case. I had a friend who chose alternative cancer treatments, to many of her friends dismay. My own Mom, after two brutual rounds of chemotherapy announced that she was done regardless of what her oncologist said. Her decision was incredibly upsetting to me, but as someone who had just gone through her own cancer journey, I felt strongly that the decision around her cancer treatment was hers to make.

In situations like these, what are the steps you should take to help the cancer patient through their treatment journey? The following nine tips will help you navigate this challenging time. This condition is very common among women especially on their reproductive age. Some are harmless and they would go away without any treatment. Harmless in the sense that it is not cancerous.

This article will show the experience of my friend fighting the candida and what she has done. Last spring/summer she was doing the Atkins diet with little or no success. She followed a yeast-fighting diet for about two months and she felt healthier than she did for a long time. However, too many social obligations and temptations won out over feeling healthy and she is feeling miserable again.

She has been dealing with a lot of stress due to marital separation and her mother-in-law’s recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. This stress seems to have caused all her worst symptoms to flare up–irritable bowel, acid reflux, arthritis-like pain in my joints (especially her knees), muscle soreness, fatigue, poor sleep patterns, fuzzy thinking, and an insatiable craving for food, esp. sweets. So she did a search. Continue reading ‘Yeast Infections Experience – Home Remedies Treatment’ »

Effectively using resources, understanding addiction treatment – An alcohol or substance abuse treatment counselor can only be effective as the knowledge and experience they have. It is essential to be able to apply a varying amount of philosophies in any given circumstance during addiction treatment. Individualized care for addicts has to be taken into consideration. Because all backgrounds and personalities are unique, the recovery path should be as well.

Caring genuinely, overcoming objections in rehab – Individuals suffering from addiction generally have a sense while in treatment to recognize genuine caring, or lack thereof coming from clinical staff. Because the work done in treatment is often difficult and very self-disclosing, addicts will look for reasons to avoid and isolate. The report, in the September 2009 edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute estimates 1.3 million additional men have been diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer since 1987. Authors claim most of this group are likely to have been overdiagnosed.

“Given the considerable time that has passed since PSA screening began, most of this excess incidence must represent overdiagnosis,” the authors write. “All overdiagnosed patients are needlessly exposed to the hassle factors of obtaining treatment, the financial implications of the diagnosis, and the anxieties associated with becoming a cancer patient…”

The increased diagnosis has been most dramatic among younger men: more than tripling since 1986 in men aged 50-59 (from 58.4 to 212.7 per 100, 000) and more than a sevenfold increase in men under age 50 (from 1.3 to 9.4 per 100,000).
